Calibrations: (Dates)

Rain: Jan 4, 2006
Note: The Rain indication is reading approximately 10% LOW (i.e., an indication of 3 inches actually reads only 90% of the actual rainfall, which would be 3/.9, or 3.33 actual inches of rain.) This is going to be corrected before the next calibration in February, 2006.

Temperature, Humidity, and Dew-point: July 24, 2006
The Temperature reading was calibrated on this date using a precision (+/- 0.1 deg F) laboratory-grade thermometer, and cross-checked with the SYV Airport Observation Station (AWOS). Deviation from the AWOS was +1.08°F. [Note: the AWOS does not report temperature with a precision of less than +/- 1°C, which is approximately +/- 2°F.] The Humidity reading was calibrated using the Santa Ynez AWOS Dewpoint value and associated (computed) Relative Humidity value.

Wind: Sep 28, 2005
Cross-check against Santa Ynez
AWOS. [Reads approximately 30% lower wind speed than SYV AWOS.]

Barometric Pressure: October 1, 2006
Cross-check and calibration using Santa Ynez Airport AWOS as the local calibration point.

Announcements
July 25, 2006: A "Heat Index" value has been added as a calculation of the standard that takes into account both temperature and humidity. This is only meaningful when the temperature is at least 80°F.

Specifications
The weather information is observed LIVE in the center of the Santa Ynez Valley, California - about 140 miles northwest of Los Angeles.  (Location)

Weather information is obtained from sensors that automatically update the website every 5 minutes. Information obtained include:

  • Temperature
  • Relative Humidity
  • Dewpoint
  • Barometric pressure
  • Wind speed
  • Wind direction
  • Rain
Note that "Heat Index" (also known as "Apparent Temperature") is a value computed from Temperature and Relative Humidity, and indicates the "comfort level" with both taken into account.

Detailed graphical and historical information may also be obtained from the Grapical Weather Information link from this web page.

Location
The weather station is located at Latitude 34° 36' 15", Longitude -120° 06' 05" [Decimal: 34.6042,-120.1014], approximately 1 mile west of Santa Ynez Airport, California, at an elevation of 630 feet above Mean Sea Level (MSL).

Standards
This weather station adheres to National Weather Service Instruction 10-1302, Dated October 17, 2003.

The temperature and humidity sensors are located 5.8' (1.8 meters) above ground level in a radiation-shielded white enclosure with an opening to the north. A low-speed fan vents the enclosure to prevent distortion from radiative heating. These sensors are calibrated with precise (.1° Celsius) thermometer and wet-bulb thermometer. (Dewpoint is calculated from the calibrated temperature and humidity values.)

The barometric sensor is calibrated with the Santa Ynez Airport Automated Weather Observation Service (AWOS), with sensors located less than 1 mile away. This calibration (concordance) takes place weekly.

The rain sensor is calibrated on a 3-month basis using a standard inflow of water into the rain gauge (tipping scale method). Rainfall is shown as of the current day, as well as total for the current "Water Year". A "Water Year" is a period from October 1 through September 30. A given Water Year (WY) is the one ending on September 30; for example, the Water Year ranging from October 1, 2007 through September 30, 2008 is referred to as "WY 2007".

Wind speed is calibrated using the anemometer rotation speed of the manufacturer (Davis Instruments, Inc.). Wind direction is calibrated visually, and is presented with respect to TRUE North (with correction for magnetic variation).

Note: The term "AWOS" means "Automated Weather Observation Service", and is provided by the local aviation authority, Santa Ynez Airport. This service can be contacted by phone via 805-686-8903.
