Throughout 2011, Solvang, known as “Little Denmark” and recognized as a “Preserve America Community” by First Lady Michelle Obama, has celebrated its 100th anniversary with a series of special events and activities--including dedicating sites along the emerging Heritage Trail each month; hosting professional cycling’s Amgen Tour of California Time Trial in May; a visit from His Royal Highness The Prince Consort Henrik of Denmark in June; the American premiere of “My Fairytale” at PCPA Theaterfest in August; in September, celebrating the 75th annual Danish Days, welcoming Team Solvang 100
Danish charity cyclists; Niels Brock Business College establishing an international program at Santa Ynez Valley High School; hosting VIP Danish golfers in November for the Børsen FirmaGolf championship, and in December, inaugurating the “100 Trees for 100 Years” display of live evergreens during Julefest.
The following events are being held in Solvang to mark the conclusion of the Centennial Celebration.
FRIDAY, JANUARY 6, 2012
Final Heritage Trail Dedication Ceremony and Time Capsule Placement at Centennial Plaza, 482 Alisal Road. Free and Open to the Public.
Join California State Assembly Member Das Williams, Santa Barbara County Third District Supervisor Doreen Farr, Solvang Mayor Jim Richardson, members of the volunteer Centennial Committee along with Esther Jacobsen Bates, Executive Director of Elverhøj Museum of History & Art and Tracy Farhad, Executive Director of the Solvang Conference & Visitors Bureau to recognize Centennial Plaza — the starting point of the emerging Heritage Trail — that honors those institutions, attractions, industries, and points of interest that tell the educational and entertaining story of the area’s rich cultural heritage.
When completed in 2012, the easy-to-walk pedestrian loop will connect over two dozen sites. Future plans include a printed map and brochure to be distributed through websites, visitor centers, museums, and schools.
For the time capsule, more than 100 elements (photos, programs, invitations, press clippings, memorabilia) have been gathered and are being included inside the vessel by City staff—and will be placed under a special brick. Additionally, special plaques and recognition will be given to the sponsors of the Centennial and Centennial Plaza itself including the Santa Ynez Band of Chumash Indians Foundation, Montecito Bank & Trust, Solvang Conference & Visitors Bureau and the City of Solvang as well as other businesses and families.
Solvang’s “Second Century Celebration” at the Hotel Corque Ballroom, 400 Alisal Road. This event is sold out.
The theme of the evening is “Live the Past Through the Present.” Civic leaders, residents and visitors alike will begin at 5:30pm with a wine reception offered by Solvang’s Lucas & Lewellen Vineyards and Toccata Wines. At 6:45pm, guests will be seated for a three-course plated gourmet dinner created by Root 246 Chef Bradley Ogden. The program will feature a special Centennial slide-show, graphic timeline and representatives of local families sharing memories and histories of their lives in Solvang during the past 100 years as well as their dreams for the second century.
Solvang’s Annual Christmas Tree Burn; in the fields of Old Mission Santa Inés, 1760 Mission Drive.
Free and Open to the Public. Supervised by the Santa Barbara County Fire Department as one of the largest fire safety demonstrations and community gatherings on California's Central Coast. All area residents are invited to bring their tree (stands & ornaments must be removed) to the burn pile from now to Noon on January 6; and then join together to see this powerful spectacle ignite the New Year and herald the “close” of Solvang's Centennial Celebration.
