Happy Chanukkah !
Posted: Wednesday, December 5, 2007
By: David Retz (Expired)Solvang, CA -
Hanukkah (also called Chanukkah) is the Jewish celebration of the 'Festival of Lights', and started at sundown, December 4, 2007 this year - always lasting for 8 days. It's one of the best-known of the many Jewish holidays because of it's association with Christmas.
Hanukkah goes back for thousands of years as a festival of praise and thanksgiving (even before the pilgrims arrived in America) - with interesting things to eat besides turkey. Like, latkes, a form of deep-fried potato pancakes - perhaps a predecessor to Aebleskivers.
Hanukkah is also called the "Festival of Candles". Candles are lit in the familiar arrangement of (9) candles - called a menorah from right to left - like the Jewish language, Hebrew. (A menorah is shown in the illustration above). Each night, another candle is lighted. The center candle, called the shammus, is used each night to light the other candles. On the eighth night, all 9 candles are lit!
